Hey, how are you?
Pretty good, actually I feel kind of funny right now because I just ate a huge california burrito haha.
First off, how did you guys come up with the name Flight To Athena?
Well we wanted to use something the tied in Greek mythology because a few of us are really into that type of stuff… After going through a few different ideas we kind of just stumbled across Flight to Athena and it stuck.
How would you describe your sound?
I would say we combine a little pop with a rock edge. We try to push the line of pop/rock without getting too heavy.
What are everyone’s roles in the band?
Everyone basically has an equal role in the band. We usually all sit down and write/form our songs together and everyone tries to pitch in ideas for everything we do. We like to make sure we are all on the same page with everything we do, just keeps everyone happy.
After having multiple lineup changes in the past, do you feel this will be a stable one or are you guys still in the works of making the right lineup?
Well most all bands have to go through a few member changes to find the right people. We have toured nationally and not everyone is up to do that all the time, it is very hard sometimes. Plus you just never know what life throws at you, sometimes things come up and being in a band just isn’t realistic anymore. I am still great friends with our 2 guitar players that we have parted with in the past.
How did you all meet and get together as a band?
Well Andrew and I (Ryan) played a few shows together in the past but in previous bands, we became friends and just stayed in contact. So when FTA was getting put together him and I getting together was a no brainer for both of us. As for Diego and Jared we just all knew of each other through mutual contacts in the Southern California area. After losing our original guitar players we got together with both of them and hit it off immediately.
What was the best and worst tour experience?
Hmmm…. Worst was blowing the transmission in our van during our very first tour, that’s for sure. We had just bought a brand new van and the tranny went out 1 mile away from a venue we were playing at haha. That was lame but we stayed with a few of the bands we played that show with for a few days while our van got fixed. It was definitely worth it in the end haha.
Best experience…. hmm… There are really too many to say but I think one of my favorite experiences on Pat our former guitar players birthday. We were somewhere in Utah so we got a hotel room, somehow got upgraded to a villa sweet at the hotel and we had a big birthday bash for him. It was pretty fun.
How dirty and messy did the tour bus get this summer?
You don’t want to know haha.
Why did the band choose to change the sound on the “Thanks For The Pep Talk EP”, compared to some of the older songs?
Well with the older stuff we were a whole different band basically. FTA had basically disbanded and a few of us wanted to bring FTA back. So with our “debut” EP as the new Flight to Athena we wanted to go in a more fun/positive direction with our music.
Are there any plans to create a new EP or album in the near future?
Yes! We are actually writing a new EP right now. We will be heading in the studio and recording late December/early January. We have already been doing pre-production on a handful of our songs. I can’t wait to release it.
Does it ever get hard not having the perks of being signed to a label?
Yea definitely. Just makes us work harder as a band, hopefully someday soon though.
Do you guys want to get signed?
Someday. Right now, like I said before, doing it all by ourselves makes us work very hard. I feel that if we put in the hard work it will teach us to not take things for granted when we do get signed someday.
By looking at the band’s myspace and twitter pages, it looks like you try your hardest to connect with the fans. Why do you feel this is important?
Yea. We LOVE talking to our fans. We LOVE meeting everyone we can who supports us. Without them we are nothing, without them the music industry is nothing. It means so much to us so we try to show our appreciation in anyway possible.
How successful do you think you guys would be, if you never used myspace, purevolume or any other website to get your music out to the public?
That’s a really hard question to answer, I really don’t know. Online promotion is just one little part of what we do. We play a lot of shows, tour, hand out free CD’s and fliers. I definitely think the web has helped out all bands though, its pretty awesome. I’m just glad we have those tools to help!
What are the band’s goals for the future thus far?
Just keep touring and making music that our fans can enjoy. We just want to keep writing songs and keep getting our music out to as many people as possible.
Is there anything else you want your fans to know??
Just that we really really do appreciate every single person out there who listens to our music or supports our band. It really does mean the world to us that people will even listen to our music. We are nothing without our fans.
