Interview with Move Out West (Eben)
What is your role in Move Out West?
I sing and play guitar.
Who else is in the band and what do they do?
There is Cyrus Thomas-Walker who plays bass, LJ Bunker who plays the drums, and Brian Hadsell plays lead guitar.
How did the band start?
The band started when all our old bands broke up. I went and auditioned for Cyrus, LJ, and Brians old band and it didn’t end up working out. LJ went off and did some drumming for the band Holiday Parade and Brian started a music magazine. Me and Cyrus decided however to play music together. After recording a couple demos, we wanted to start adding members. Brian and LJ seemed like the perfect people and they agreed. We recorded some songs and played our first show in December, 2009.
If you could add any one artist to the band, dead or alive, who would you choose? Why?
I would have to say Ace Enders and I say that with more reasoning than just being a big fan. I think chemistry is important and we have always had an amazing time working with him in the past (A Collection of Samplers). There are so many artists that I love but when we recorded music with Ace, we always feel extremely comfortable. Ace always has always showed a lot of passion behind his music which is something we strive to do.
When you guys first started, did the band anticipate being successful this quick?
Not at all. We were all really surprised how well our first batch of songs came out. We didn’t really take any time before recording our first couple songs as a band and didn’t really know if there would be any chemistry. We just all missed playing music really bad and never really expected anyone to care.
Being a fairly new band, how did Move Out West get to play the 2009 Jingle My Bells festival with popular bands that have been around for years?
Since we were all in bands before we got some opportunity’s pretty fast. We are extremely fortunate to have such good friends that believed in us. It was a lot of fun announcing the band and the show at the same time.
What is your favorite thing about always being on the road and touring?
I really love to travel. I love seeing different places and I love meeting new people. One thing I really love about being on tour is the conversations that are had between the members of the band in our van. We are always laughing and the lack of responsibility at times is great.
What is the song writing process like? Does everyone contribute to writing songs?
Everyone totally contributes. I typically form an idea for a song and bring it to the band. Everyone puts the own two sense in and writes all their own parts. It sometimes takes a day and sometimes takes months.
Are there plans on coming out with a full length album any time soon?
We have an EP we just recorded down in Atlanta that will be out early this year (late winter/early spring). I am really happy with the way it turned out. We put a lot of heart into this EP and I think people can tell.
Why do you have songs up for free download on Purevolume rather than charging for every download? Is this important for the band?
It is important to get your music out there. I think a lot of people get caught up in making money at this point in the game, but we just want to show people our music. We have seen friends do it and have a lot of success. If you give a little bit in the beginning, it may just pay off.
If you were to get signed, what would you guys look for in a label?
As of now we are totally DIY and I think we are capable of doing a lot for the band on our own. If we signed I would like to see a label really believe in us and provided support both financially and musically. We would need a label to do things that we can’t do ourselves.
How would you describe you and the rest of the members?
We are all pretty insane I would say. It is likely the reason we all get along so well. We are all extremely passionate about music and being as real as can be.
Besides playing music, what does everyone like to do in their free time?
We don’t really have a whole lot of free time. We all have jobs and play music. We really love just relaxing and talking. We aren’t all that exciting!
Is there anything else you want your fans to know?
To go download 7 free songs on www.purevolume.com/moveoutwest and expect a full US tour this spring with a brand new EP.
