Can you tell us a little about yourself?
Born in the backseat of a greyhound bus, rollin down highway 41. Born Derek, but changed my name to Dyan at age 18. Had a spirtual expierience in the jungle from a plant that only grows in the jungle….thats when i became the most positive kid alive. My reason for being here is to spread positivity through words. I make music under the name MOD SUN which stands for, Movement On Dreams Stand Under None, also short for “modern sunshine”. The type of music is defined as, Hippy Hop.
Where did you come up with the alias, Modern Sunshine / Movement On Dreams Stand Under None?
‘Honestly, “it” came up with me….”It” found me. It means the world to me, but its hard to take credit for something that i give credit to, ya know?
When did you get into making music?
The band “Hanson” got me into music. I just thought it was cool they were so young and doin bigger things than adults. I started playing drums. My dad also always listened to nothin but classic 60s/70s music. Always Dylan, Allman Brothers, Neil Young, The Band….some of the greatest music ever made. He didnt really bring me up, but it was in the air.
After playing drums for many years, what made you decide to go solo and write your own music?
I just wanted to say something. In my old band & almost all bands, the songs are love songs…mostly break up songs & focused on negative. I always thought that if you have a gathering of people in front of you, you should use that positively, not the contrary.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but to my understanding you have played in 3 bands before you started “Mod Sun”. What have you learned from your experiences with these bands?
Ive been in 5 bands before MOD SUN, but only 3 of em were successful. I learned business, tour ethics, how to successfully market your project….took in a lot of culture on the road, & of course learned how to create songs.
Who were your influences growing up? How has your influences changed?
Growing up i was all about Travis Barker & the whole pop punk scene. I got heavy into Bob Dylan around 18 & he has been my influence in life since.
Why do you choose positivity to be one of the common messages in your music?
Spreading positivity only brings more positivity to you. It just makes sense, talk about the “bad”, get more “bad”. Talk about “good” & well…..take a look at my career so far.
You appeared at a few warped tour and bamboozle dates. How was the experience?
Amazing! big thanks to Scary Kids Scaring Kids, Christian McKnight & John D @ Live Nation, & Christofer Drew.
How does it feel to have your music finally go national? Are you excited for the tour dates in Australia and New Zealand?
Couldn’t be more excited! Im actually answering these questions from the airport. I feel like Australia is honna be a great market for me.
When you began Mod Sun, what were your expectations or goals for the future?
The top. Literally me & my partner/exec producer Mike Bryant have always had the big picture in mind. Radio? Yes. TV? Yes. Magazines? Yes. We will do it all, BUT without sacrificing what we stand for.
A lot of your songs are up for free download. Why do you feel it’s important to offer your songs for free?
You have to do it. If you really want people to listen to your music over making money, prove it and put it out for free. 100% of the time more people will listen.
How do you feel about the way media connects hip hop and rap music with violence, drugs, and other “bad” acttivity?
Its whatever. Ive never watched the news in my life so my opinion would be an ignorant one.
What do you think makes your music different from other artists in the same genre?
I get people to focus on all the naturally beautiful things that come for free, rather than telling people to add excess to there life. Im not sayin im the only one doin it, but i do it well.
We are going to wrap this up. Is there anything else you want your fans to know?
Movement On Dreams, Stand Under None. Do everything NOW, hesitation leads to devistation.
